WELLINGTON CIRCLE FIRST FLOOR RENOVATION

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This family needed a more functional furniture plan family room that would accommodate not only family time around the fireplace, movie and game nights but also entertaining adult friends.  Beyond the functional needs, this beautiful home and family really wanted some added bravado while keeping a few sentimental family heirloom pieces.

To allow some of the existing architectural details to stand out, we started with the walls and ceiling, changing the paint color to a warm neutral which allowed the white trim to shine.  The addition of the deep blue grasscloth wall covering on the coffered ceiling emphasizes the custom wood working details of the home and the unique equestrian light fixture. A new custom chunky mantle was constructed from local cherry and installed to provide dramatic scale and settle the focal point back onto the stone fireplace.

Lighting and furniture pieces were selected to create cozy family lounge spaces and to maximize flexible entertaining areas.  A custom Lee Industries sectional and pair of chairs from Antiquarian shop in performance fabrics were chosen to wrap the room with flexible seating.  Designer block print pillows in shades of green and blue sit atop the sectional and chairs, and leather ottomans and martini tables accessorize the seating and can be moved around the room where needed.

The dramatic wall of windows is further highlighted with light filtering roman shades in a Schumacher linen with dark green grosgrain trim.  Lighting adds layers of interest and includes brass sconces mounted above the sectional.  An oversized hand painted lamp rests on a burled vintage side table to anchor the sectional.  The round coffee table adds additional warm wood tones and centers the room, bringing the focus back to the stone fireplace.

The charming and cozy sitting room is located right off of the open dining and kitchen area of the home and has become a respite from the otherwise large, vast open spaces within the rest of the home. The design highlights the petite dimensions of the room by making it a dramatic and cozy spot to lounge in front of the fire and play together as a family.

Trim and built ins were painted a dramatic dark blue and contrasted with handprinted grass cloth wallpaper from Peter Dunham, and we played with layering patterns in shades of blue to add interest. Brass sconces wrapped in navy leather from Ralph Lauren lighting, a dramatic Visual Comfort ceiling fixture, and a set of navy lamps from Ballard Designs provide a layered approach to lighting.

Special touches include a custom bound rug, a classic and sculptural chair from Highland House in a soft blue, unique art from Kayce Hughes, and finally pillows in fabrics and trim from Lulie Wallace and Schumacher.
