ORCHARD DRIVE DECK
ABOUT THE PROJECT
This deck project was a large undertaking and came together seamlessly due to a very successful collaboration with architect, Mark O’Matz. We knew the must-haves, which included a ten-foot-tall stone fireplace, and we also knew that structural support was critical to the planning phase. Also important were the sight lines from the front door to this outdoor fireplace. As you enter the home, you immediately see the fireplace focal point, which pulls you right back outside. The firebox boasts a gas assist starter and the stone façade is customized with an over-grouting technique to add texture and interest.
Another must for this project was real wood decking. After an exhaustive research phase, we selected a thermorized Pennsylvania oak from a local mill. The wood decking is a deep rich brown upon installation but will patina to a warm grey over time. An oil finish can be used regularly to restore the finish to the original depth of color.
The furniture layout was a critical early consideration during the design process and prioritized deck space large enough to accommodate dining and lounging seating for a crowd. Lighting was also an early consideration. Classic lanterns were hung on the exterior of the home, and professional commercial string lights were installed to add ambiance.
Finally, teak furniture was selected from the Outer company, which offers comfortable weatherproof cushions with built-in covers and can be used summer through winter, even in the wet Pittsburgh weather, crucial to enjoying this space year round.
