STANDISH BOULEVARD FIRST FLOOR RENOVATION
ABOUT THE PROJECT
We were brought into this Mt. Lebanon home to design the finishing touches after a recent renovation. Our approach focused on adding warmth and character by blending modern functionality with the charm of traditional design. We replaced the flooring throughout the entire first floor with custom-milled, red oak that was stained on site from Allegheny Hardwoods, mimicking the original narrow planks of the home. Opportunities were found to showcase the owners’ art and antiques collection, integrating them seamlessly into the design. Bold paint colors were used to accentuate architectural details, and carefully selected accessories were added to further enhance the cohesive and personalized style of the home.
The entry was transformed with a striking combination of dramatic paint from Farrow and Ball and wallpaper by Lee Jofa, highlighted by a pale pink geometric stair runner and a custom entry rug. This set the tone for the rest of the home’s design. A stunning stained wood front door with custom hardware by Rocky Mountain Hardware and a large window added instant curb appeal, welcoming guests into a space that is both refined and inviting.
Our team addressed several key challenges on the first floor to improve flow and function. The kitchen was opened to the formal living room, allowing for more flexible furniture placement. New, appropriately scaled furniture and a custom rug were selected to better fit the space and paneling and two new windows were added to the fireplace wall.
A small 5-foot addition to the dining room allowed for a larger dining table and custom bar cabinetry, clearly delineating traffic patterns between the kitchen and family room. Paneling was extended from the entry around the dining area to add architectural interest and detail. Planning for a future large porch off the back of the home was also incorporated into the design, complementing the home's architectural style and the unusual roof angles. Several windows were added or enlarged to increase natural light throughout the first floor.
The custom bar cabinetry became the heart of the home, providing both a stylish entertaining area and additional kitchen storage. High-gloss cabinetry, painted in the same hue as the entry paneling, was paired with antique brass details, an antiqued mirror, and a marble backsplash with petite brass sconce lighting. This central feature ties the space together, creating a beautiful yet functional focal point.
The wall between the dining and family rooms was removed and replaced with vintage salvaged French doors, creating an open yet defined connection between the two spaces. Custom window treatments were designed for the family room to control light and add visual interest, and a built-in custom storage unit was installed in the family room to keep toys out of sight while maintaining the space’s relaxed, family-friendly vibe.
