PARKWAY DRIVE FIRST FLOOR RENOVATION
ABOUT THE PROJECT
This bright new kitchen was designed for a young family who recently moved back to Pittsburgh to be closer to family. Their move from California made them long for the cool colors of the ocean so we used that as inspiration in selecting finishes. The overall design is classic and timeless to work with the architectural style of the house.
The original kitchen was tiny and not very functional, so we opened up the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create one large space for their family to gather, while also creating more functional storage. Part of the space planning solutions involved relocating the existing powder room door so it no longer opened into the kitchen, adding a coat closet off the dining room, and creating a cased opening from the entry into the dining room to create separation.
Storage considerations were an important part of the design and we used every available space to incorporate storage. Custom cabinetry lines the perimeter of both spaces. We designed a custom radiator cover with drawer storage that flanks both sides of the radiator. This unit feels more like a piece of furniture and can also function as a serving buffet when hosting a larger group. The dueling towers on either side of the radiator cabinetry house different beverage stations. The right tower houses a coffee bar and the left a cocktail bar.
We maintained the existing laundry chute in the corner of the kitchen as it’s a very convenient location to throw used kitchen dish towels. We treated it just like the other perimeter walls in the space with tile so it blends in with the space. We also maintained the beautiful stained glass window in the dining room as a way to incorporate the existing architecture. New hardwood floors were installed throughout to create a cohesive space and custom roman shades now adorn the windows to create softness, privacy, and light filtration.
