JEFFERSON DRIVE FIRST FLOOR RENOVATION

ABOUT THE PROJECT

While graciously large, this formal living room had original paneling on two adjacent walls and plaster on the others, creating a feeling of imbalance.  Our challenge was to keep the original pine paneling of this historic home while modernizing and balancing the space.  Rather than remove or paint the paneling, we disrupted the heavy wood with a grasscloth wallcovering behind the original built-in shelving and new custom fireplace surround that felt perfectly scaled to the large room.  The family wanted to use the generous wood burning fireplace more often, so we created a more inviting, casual furniture plan that invites lounging for the family, including their playful pup, Rocky. The custom upholstered furnishings are classic in style and fabric selection, but comfortable and generously sized, achieving a traditional but cheerful blue, green, and cream color palette.  The selection of light, neutral walls with contrasting darker moldings remind visitors of the home’s early 1900’s roots while graphic fabric selections in stripes and ikats add a fresh perspective.

The large kitchen only needed a minor renovation to feel like new again.  The cabinets, appliances, flooring, countertops and backsplash were all retained while cabinet hardware, lighting, a new table and chairs were updated.  A sweet roman shade in a fresh, bold pattern replaced the heavy traditional window coverings, and fresh banquette upholstery reignited family meals.  Styling was crucial to the success of this kitchen refresh.  A mix of wood, rattan, marble, ceramics, and glass in subtle neutrals added layers of interest and comfort.
